SITES

The ancient sites of Belize represent the past of the Maya people who occupied and continue to live in this area of Central America. These archaeological remains include some of the largest ancient cities of the Pre-Columbian Maya world (Caracol and Lamanai), the remains of intermediate and small towns, as well as the small platforms which represent the family homes of farmers.

These ancient sites, with large buildings, carvings, and ancient writing have fascinated people for hundreds of years. The Department of Archaeology, within the Belize National Institute of Culture and History, continues to sponsor research at these ancient sites as well as maintain them for visitors from Belize and around the world.
